Sentence brackets
In a statement, the conjugated verb stays in the second position. A modal’s infinitive or a separable prefix closes the sentence. The information between them fits inside this bracket. Start with a time expression if you like; the conjugated verb still comes second.
First element → conjugated verb → middle → final verb part
Ich muss heute arbeiten.
I have to work today.
Heute kaufe ich ein.
Today I am doing the shopping.
